BMW could probably make an E89 Z4 that light with lots of carbon, but it's a significantly smaller and less powerful car than the M3/4.

This is where being an internet jockey fails you. Did you own and weigh an E46 M3 without a driver? Get back to me when you look up actual scaled weight of a manual E46 M3 with manual seats, no sunroof, no driver and at least half a tank of gas. I suspect you will find an answer between 3,185 and 3,240.
