On the M235, it just looked dull, old and boring .. This car is meant to be fun and I think it will look better in a brighter more fun color.

I don't think BMW went for the "fun" look. I think they intended M235i to be a distinguished, almost stately looking luxury coupe for young doctors, lawyers etc: After all this is a classic, timeless 3-box design harking back to the 60s when 2002 was born. IMHO mineral grey is a good fit for such a design. And mineral grey is dark or almost space-grey bright depending on lightning conditions, the color has unusually wide dynamic range.
