The other major reason that these cars don't compete is what their goal is (at least here in the US):
1) CLA was designed to bring younger buyers into the mercedes brand - entry level pricing is important and sloughing off the "old, stodgy" reputation of mercedes customers is impt
2) The 2er was designed to provide compact, "purist" sports coupe in the original spirit of the 2002 or the e30. BMW will use the 320i or the X1 to get younger buyers cheaply into the brand. I do not anticipate the 2er being "affordable" at all.
