I think he was confusing the matter. More gears means better acceleration because the gears are shorter and the engine can stay in the sweet spot. However, in real world driving, if you're cruising along in 8th and you want to get maximum acceleration, the tranny has to drop to 3rd, which adds a delay to the acceleration. That's more for NA engines though, because FI engines tend to make tons of torque down low so you can get reasonable acceleration even in high gears. Part of the reason I like the N54/55 engines so much.
