It's the "new normal" problem. Every year, auto manufacturers look for ways to draw in new customers. "Now with more interior room" is a major selling point in the mass market. How does one deliver "more interior room" year after year, after year, after year?
This process occurs slowly, but surely, and consumer preferences evolve to match. What used to be considered a large car is now the "new normal", because no car manufacturer can risk consumers hearing the argument that their competitor's offering has "3 inches more leg room", or "6 cubic feet more trunk space."
