Downgrade? It would be about like saying the S65 in the current M3 is a downgrade from an N63. Or for that matter, it would be like saying the S14 in the original E30 M3 was a downgrade from the M20 found in the 325i of the time.

If BMW M does deliver an I4 it will be a coveted engine along the lines of the new Mercedes M133 which you will be hearing a lot more about very soon.
