A reworked version of the current N55 will be just fine by me. Given how Porsche is moving to a smaller FI 2.0+ liter in their Cayman/Boxster come 2016, I think BMW will be look at that as a comparison. Leaving the M3/M4 with the 6 cylinder they might go with a 2.3 liter FI engine for the M1/M2 series. That is if they ever decide to do a hatchback version and call it a 1 series.
