My children sure kept the seats in our old cars a mess. Constantly having to take resolve to them. I have had easier time with leather. Having said that I agree that leathers have their own issues. In order to wear better the leather has to be coated, like Dakota leather, which in turn looks like cheap vinyl in my opinion. Nicer looking leather does no wear as well and requires more care and usually does not stay nice looking for long.
