Yes, it’s a very difficult equation to balance, and very dependent on your local road conditions and how you drive the car. Plus how long you’re going to own the car. Different people go in different directions.

In my case, I have the OE summer wheel setup, a separate set of winter wheels and winter tires, and a retro-fitted M Performance LSD. So my summer tires are warm-biased, the winters are more wet-weather and cool biased, and the LSD is sort of icing on the cake. My LSD was dealer-fitted to keep my extended warranty valid, for about $3K. But mine is a second car and I do relatively low mileage (~6K/year) and I intend to run it to 100K miles. So the cost can be amortised over about 14 years. And in the summer it does a regular touring 3-4 weeks around the Alps, where the LSD shines on mountain roads. But for someone who does higher mileages and/or will change the car in 3-4 years, and/or mainly does an urban commute and so on, they might decide quite differently.
