When we see what the final M2 will look like, when/if it's released we can do real comparos.
Maybe the M Badge will be diluted but it will only be in the eyes of the "purists" and not everyday consumers.
If BMW can throw in a stock N55, with a slight tune, M Brakes and slap a M badge on it to get more market penetration at a cheaper price point than the direct competition (usintg existing manufacturing/tooling), it's could be considered marketing genius. Especially since most BMW's already outperform their competition and a smaller/less expensive M2 would appeal to a much younger demographic.
I'd say leave the marketing and engineering to BMW.
It seems like everyone would like a replacement for the e92/M3 sub 50k.
Ain't gonna happen.
