I have done this a few times. I stop the car at the mailbox, which is at the end of our driveway. Instead of turning off the ignition, I put the car in park. If I am not careful, the car may still be going 1 or 2 mph. Under those circumstances, the car comes to a very quick stop, as if I have hit a wall. Over the years, I have done this less and less but no apparent harm to the car's innards.
I don't know what the cut-off speed is for engaging park, but I shudder to think what would happen if it did so at more than a couple of mph.
