I don't think this particular rattle is common as you are the first I've heard of in 2 years of being on this forum. I think "rattles" in general are a bit more common, but most seem to be related to exhaust mounting or interior speaker locations. Mine has a weird metallic rattle upon a cold start every now and again (suspecting exhaust), but once it settles down to normal idle, it goes away and doesn't come back again while driving. In fact, in terms of the interior, I think my 2-series is the most solid and rattle/noise free car I've ever owned.
