Conversely, I understand that the fob wirelessly syncs with the car. Have seen the SA put the fob against the steering column to update its data.
(Shrug), not something I have made much attention to, but our X3 fob is slightly longer. Compared to my Note 8, not much to worry about.

In the E90, the non-Comfort-Access car required that the fob be inserted in a slot in the dash to start the car. The slot also energized the fob’s rechargeable battery. With Comfort Access, the slot wasn’t used, and there was a replaceable, non-rechargeable battery. The two fobs were the same size.
