I've just been through changing a BMW tow hitch over I had on my 116i which didn't fit my new 116i m sport even as well the control unit didn't work and this had to be changed as well. I was lucky I made it part of the deal to upgrade to the new car. BMW had to install a new tow hitch which was a M tow hitch and control unit and no cost to me. It was due to the design M Sport bumper for the tow hitch.
