It's not at all surprising that the choice between the two is divisive. The 2er uses a classic wedge design, with a rakish front and strong rear visual balance. The CLA follows in the CLS's footsteps, applying the teardrop design where lines at the rear return to a single visual point of focus.

The hood-to-windscreen angle on the 2er is more acute as well. The CLA has a strong arch-like design cue going on. Some people love it; others hate it.

Honestly, I appreciate both designs. The Merc reminds me of an old Delahaye. Anyone who tells you that this is an "ugly" design is just expressing their opinion. From a design perspective, it's a beautiful piece of work. Being 100% honest, it's not my preference though. I prefer the wedge design of the 2er. It's visually simpler, but the rakish lines give a more aggressive appearance.

They're both fantastic designs, IMO. The 2er could be likened to the shape of a fighter jet, while the CLA is more like an elegant dolphin.

In the attachment, I've drawn on what I think are the most visually prevalent design lines (ignoring cutlines).
