Pretty much every sport is that way this day and age.

I tried to get into competitive snowboarding years back. I ran circles around all the local competitors in boarder cross. I earned my way to the national competition that could have led to a spot in the Olympics, but I couldn't afford it. Tried to get sponsors but they were hard to get. Eventually I gave up. If you can't bring money into someone else's pocket, they don't want you there. That doesn't discount the skilled constructors and drivers though.
