Brown (for "earth") is common overseas. Black is used here as "neutral" or common. Green is becoming standard for ground now.
You CAN do this fix yourself if you know how to solder, what to solder to, how to feed the wire through one of the vent holes in the socket housing, use a quick disconnect and solder to the brown wire on the harness. Otherwise make BMW do it!
