I think the safety issue is about size, not age.
A child of seven is likely to get smacked right in the face should there be an airbag deployment.
Besides, I think it would be a giant PIA to have to open the door for your son to get out of the car on a regular basis.
Not a sedan fan, but, its the the right call for a few more years.
