I was always a big fan of hearing protection. The real risk for me was target shooting and model aircraft (110+ dB two-stroke glow engines up close).
I should note that when my hearing was evaluated as "better than the average person in his 30s", I was entering my 50s. One of my wife's best friends worked for David Clark back in the day and was able to get me the good stuff. Still, time does knock some of the response down.
