I bought a new '88 M3 in the summer of '87 and kept it for five years. After hearing stories about engine rebuilds costing people upwards of $10K, I decided it was time to give her up. It was sad - one of the best cars I owned. Since then, leasing has been the norm for me.
My wife keeps cars for 10 years, so we buy them. Just put another $2K into her Mercedes last fall.
